The lawn project.
Phase one lifting off old turf.

Phase two putting on base soil.

Phase three raking over roughly,
early pictures show start rough texture.

Raking.

Phase four shuffling over base soil.

Phase five putting on topsoil final layer and shuffling
this in, damp areas denoted low spots from previous.

Note 1st turve sod in place at edge.
Turves are worked like brickwork,
staggered at joints, and boards laid
over just laid turves as you work
on, thus compacting as you go.

Finally phase six completing laying and light rolling.

The lawn has been down since Friday May 9th
and is being well cared for by its fastidious owner.
I anticipate that I moved 8 tons of earth away,
put 13 tons of subsoil on, 3 tons of topsoil
on, then 8 tons of new turf back again.
32 tons in all. Also moved about one ton of
the original turf somewhere different
to where it first was, and laid down about
two tons of woodchip in a separate exercise.
I now weigh 3 stone and wheeze quite a bit.

UPDATE July 18th 2003
How it looks now.

Two months on, and after this very grim dry spell,
thankfully Robert and Teresa have watered well,
and done such a very good job of sustaining it.

Extreme close up showing I need more
photographic lessons before I get to
David Bailey standard.

Shot of the texture taken just before the next trim.
It is no use my having done backbreaking work,
if it had not been backed up by religiously applied
waterings, and careful plus sensible mowing,
which has been judiciously applied here.
This was a team effort.
