Putting People Before Politics.
We have all been members of the Conservative party for many years, serving what
we thought was the good of the people we represented. In 2003 Jean Luck was deselected candidate by the Conservative Party after serving the people of Alvechurch as councillor for more than 12 years. She decided to stand as Independent and was elected.
Sarah Bushby, Ann Doyle, Mike Gill, Elizabeth Lammie and Nick Psirides were
elected as Conservative Councillors in 2003. They increasingly found that they had
to vote on issues against their conscience and the interests of their electorate,
in order to abide by the party whip.
The crunch came over a decision by the controlling Conservative Group, without consulting anyone, to allow this firm of developers to put forward a plan to develop the Rovers Football Ground. This was very much against the wishes of the local residents. We objected within the Conservative Group, but made no progress. When the issue
was brought before the Council, we proposed that a referendum be quickly undertaken,
before a final decision was taken on any proposed development. This was carried unanimously, nevertheless we found ourselves disciplined for proposing the referendum
without giving the leadership prior notice.
It became obvious that we could not serve both the party and the people of
Bromsgrove and District when such major conflicts arose. We decided to resign
from the Conservative Group and join the existing Independent, Councillor Mrs
Jean Luck, to form a grouping of six independent Councillors on the authority.
We have, since taking this action, received overwhelming support and encouragement from people who appreciate our efforts to abandon party political dogma, and party control, to put PEOPLE BEFORE POLITICS.
WE INTEND TO FULLY RESPOND TO THE NEEDS AND CONCERNS OF THE PEOPLE IN THE COMMUNITIES WE REPRESENT, AND TO WORK IN THE BEST INTERESTS OF THE PEOPLE OF BROMSGROVE DISTRICT NOT SERVE A POLITICAL PARTY INTEREST.
